Mascot Madness
Written by Ryan Jackson    PDF Print E-mail

Often the choice of a mascot reflects a desired quality. A common example of this is the "fighting spirit," and competitive nature which is personified by warriors or predatory animals.  Mascots may also symbolize a local or regional trait. For these reasons colleges and universities have employed dogs as their mascot or athletic representative. The most widely accepted breed is the English bulldog. There are about 39 universities across the nation that use bulldogs as their mascot. Among some of these colleges are Georgetown University Hoyas, University of Georgia Bulldogs, Gonzaga Bulldogs, Yale Bulldogs, Fresno State Bulldogs and Butler Bulldogs.

Georgetown University's mascot is Jack the Bulldog. Around 1926, Georgetown used a bulldog named “Hoya”. Throughout the years the dog changed breeds until recent years when the school purchased a bulldog that was a show dog. Georgetown wanted to call the dog “Hoya” but the dog didn’t reply to any name but “Jack”, his show name. Therefore, Jack the Bulldog came into place. This particular bulldog grew favor amongst the students, as he was an entertaining edition to the campus.

William Hayes

“Pinky is absolutely the laziest dog I ever had, but she loves to be around you. She doesn’t like to do too much playing,” says the third-season Tennessee Titan defensive end, William Hayes of his lethargic American bulldog. “She just lays under you and chills. I think she fits my lifestyle the most because I’m always on the road or at practice and she doesn’t require a whole lot of activity. She’s a good fit for me.”

Ironically, though, you wouldn’t think so at first look. Judging from the on-field performances of this six-foot-three, 272-pound powerhouse on any given Sunday, you would expect his pet to be just as dangerous as the man himself.

Breed Breakdown: Standard Poodle
Written by Ryan Jackson    PDF Print E-mail

Researchers aren’t certain the origin of the Standard Poodle, but some believe the breed came from France or Germany. It is known that these dogs have been prevalent throughout Western Europe for hundreds of years. Both the Germans and French gave the Standard Poodle unique names. The name “Poodle” comes from the German word “Pudel” which means “one who plays in water. The French however, named the dog “Caniche” which means “Duck Dog.” Along with the names, the two countries used the Standard Poodle’s intelligence and trainability for search and rescue and to hunt. It wasn’t until later generations that the breed developed into the Standard Poodle and Toy Poodle of today.

Due to the Standard Poodle’s high level of intelligence, it is one of the most trainable breeds today. They are proud, graceful and very noble animals with great respect to their owners. However, due to their cleverness, these pets are very sensitive to their owner’s tone of voice.
