Breed Breakdown: Shih Tzu
Written by Ryan Jackson

Many people call them by their common American name, the Shih Tzu, but the Chinese called them Sure-ds, meaning “lion dog.” Ancient Chinese sixteenth and seventeenth century drawings depict small lions as a resemblance of the Shih Tzu. Theorists believe that this breed was the direct result of a Tibetan dog and a Pekingese. Perhaps the descendant of the Pekingese is a reason why the Shih Tzu has such a compact face. This breed was so important to Chinese heritage that many Chinese owners refused to sell or trade these dogs. It wasn’t until 1930 that the breed was introduced to England and later to the rest of the world.

As many portable dogs, the Shih Tzu is adored for its small features. In a similar comparison to the Lhasa Apso, the Shih Tzu has an exaggerating amount of fur. The fur grows upward above the nose giving it a “chrysanthemum face”. The breed sometimes appears as if it has a mustache or beard with a black dot for a nose. The eyes are rather large and wide set. Forget about searching for the ears on the dog as the mass amount of fur covers the dog’s ears. As far as the tail, it is usually bulky and curls over the dog’s back. These dogs can get up to eleven inches and weigh nine to sixteen pounds. The life expectancy for these dogs is above average as they can live to be almost 20 years old. They can come in colors of black, tan, red and white, although black and white are the most common colors. No matter how cute, the Shih Tzu can cause problems for the owners.

Shih-Tzu dogs have a cuddly personality about them, which can make them very sneaky with their owners. These dogs can develop what is called Small Dog Syndrome, where the dog believes that he is the leader and will show human like behaviors. For example, Shih Tzu dogs can have separation anxiety and jealousy, which can lead to growling, biting and snapping. So if you are an owner that is not very commanding, the Shih Tzu will be hard for you to train, as they need strong guidance. They are very stubborn.. They love to tell their owner what they want something, when they want it and how they want it. So the Shih Tzu is known for taking charge. It is the owner’s responsibility to make sure that does not happen. There are also some precautions as the owner of the Shih Tzu.

This breed is heat sensitive and cannot stay in the sun for a long period. Planes have a strict restriction on transporting this breed because of that problem. Also, due to the breed’s compact face, Shih Tzu’s can find it hard to breath and drink at the same time from their water bowl as the level of the water can cover their nose easily. It is common for the breed to have training on a water bottle with a rolling ball such as the one guinea pigs and hamsters drink from. Grooming is also another big precaution. Shih Tzu dogs need to be groomed daily and perhaps visit a vet to have a cut at least every 5-6 weeks. The fur can distort the dog’s breathing and their eyes, which are both very sensitive. Also, the teeth of the Shih Tzu are very sensitive and must be monitored even at a young age as teeth can fall out easily.

All is not bad with the breed as they are very loving and affectionate dogs that like to cuddle with their owners. The breed is great with kids and they have high spirits indoors especially sense they are sensitive to heat outdoors. If you have allergies, no need to worry because the Shih Tzu does not shed. No matter how long the fur may get they hardly shed at all. Although they require time and effort, they are a trustworthy breed that  loves companionship with their owner. Celebs like Nicole Richie have a Shih Tzu named Honeychild, Beyonce also has a Shih Tzu named Munchie as well as Miley Cyrus who named her dog Loco.

Dogs turn in circles before lying down because in the wild this instinctive action turns long grass into a bed.
