Cute and cuddly, this breed always gets recognition when entering a room. If their cute faces don’t bring a smile to your face, maybe their small frame will. Travel size is an understatement as the Pomeranian comes in at a whopping three to seven pounds and only reaches seven to twelve inches in height. You may have seen this breed in many movies such as “Double Take” with Orlando Jones and also the movie “Chasing Papi” with Sophia Vergara. The pocket pooches make a lot of appearances in the arms of famous celebrities such as Paris Hilton , Nicole Richie and Jessica Alba. Known as the Pomeranian or Pom, a lot is packed into one tiny dog.
An interesting fact, Queen Victoria of England owned multiple Pomeranians. She bred the dog for show and got it to the size standard we know today. The Pom originally got its name from the region Pomerania, which is now Germany and Poland. It’s actually hard to believe that back in history, this dog weighed 30 pounds and was used to herd sheep. The Pom of today is very lively and active. Their coat comes in colors such as red, orange, white, cream, blue, black, and tan. Their coat color determines their nose color. Pomeranians have a double coat that is very thick and sheds consistently. Grooming is required regularly as owner.
The teeth of a the breed can be very sharp but also can suffer from tooth decay if not properly maintained. Dry foods or crunchy milk bones are essential for healthy teeth. Due to their short bodies, caution should be taken for their tiny legs. Because of their short legs, Poms can be prone to having dislocated patellas, a disorder of the knee-cap. Doggy stairs for beds or higher grounds are helpful to keep this breed healthy. As a rule of thumb, it’s not a good idea to let your them jump off high surfaces. Another helpful tip is to keep a look out for eye infections. Washing on a consistent basis or cleaning their eyes is a good idea to prevent bacterial infections. Other health concerns include heart problems and hip dysplasia.
The Pomeranian’s personality is certainly something to cherish. They are very active dogs and can be the life of the party. They are very good at performing tricks and are sometimes found in circus acts. Because of their protective nature they seek to care for their owner, serving as watch dogs, loyal and very intelligent. The breed also possesses a zeal to impress, uplift the spirit and please their owners. Due to their active nature, the Pom can bark incessantly and can be aggressive towards strangers. To promote positive behavior, training while it is a puppy is important. Establishing the role of pack leader is to raising a successful Pom.
As you can tell, Poms may appear little but they come packed with excitement once you bring one into your home. The breed is great for apartment and inside living.
